Canola – Grazing option for sheep & cattle

With the poor seasonal conditions, some growers are considering feeding off canola crops (or canola hay) with grazing sheep and/or cattle.
Canola does contain reasonable levels of energy & protein for ruminants, but if animals are not introduced to Canola gradually, a number of problems can occur.  These problems are exacerbated with crops that are moisture stressed.
Similar to any summer grazing of cereal crops or stubbles, ensure livestock are retreated with a clostridial vaccine (3-in-1 as a minimum).  Also include an injection of Vitamin B12 plus A, D & E at least 14 days before introduction to the paddock, or hay.
It is also important to increase their intake of magnesium & fermentable carbohydrates before introduction.  Speak with your local FPAG store for the correct way to do this.
