As with previous years, October starts the 3 month countdown in ram preparation for a January joining.
Rams will work and perform best if they are prepared properly; often we see a lot of money spent on these animals and disappointment experienced when lambing percentages are reviewed. The ram often gets the blame & it is not always his fault!
As stress has a major effect on sperm production (can knock levels down for 8 – 10 weeks), October is a good time to do all the physical checks & jobs ie shearing, drenching, vaccinating & the 5 “T” Check (Torso, Teeth, Toes, Testes & Tossle). This allows a good 8 weeks plus to recover from any knocking around that they may encounter.
This is also a great time to give them a treatment of Multimin® Injection for sheep. This tops up essential trace elements, plus the added Zinc will help with hoof health. Any product left over left over, target those second year ewes. Multimin® will “sting”, so leave treatment till after shearing & physical checks are done!
