The Enhanced Abattoir Surveillance data runs on the financial year.
This graph is purely for sheep sent direct to abattoir to Thomas Foods from the Murray Mallee & Upper SE Region. 53% of the regions producers contributed sheep to this report.
Of interest, especially heading in to lamb marking is the high percentages for arthritis (73% with affected sheep over two years of age and 25% with affected lambs). Vaccination lesions came it at 7% of producers having lesions in their lambs and 26% of those affected lines being trimmed.
This data could be useful when discussing the use of Eryvac to prevent arthritis in lambs and the importance of only using ¼ in needles in lambs, changing the needles regularly (atleast every pack of vaccine and preferably every 100 lambs or when the needles becomes hooked if it gets dropped) and selecting an appropriate vaccination site.
The breakeven point, for economic justification of vaccine use, is half a percent (0.005%). Bare in mind these figures do not account for any culls on farm. Just the animals that are considered fit to load.
